Summary

Tipranavir, boosted with ritonavir, strongly inhibits CYP3A4 and can greatly increase quinidine concentrations. This raises the risk of serious ventricular arrhythmia and is contraindicated in labeling.

What this interaction means in plain words

Quinidine and Tipranavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Quinidine belongs to Anti Parasitic; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

CYP3A4 inhibition by ritonavir-boosted tipranavir decreases quinidine metabolism.

What to do

Do not co-administer; use an alternative antiarrhythmic or antiretroviral regimen.
