Summary
Valbenazine can prolong the QT interval at higher exposures, and long-acting beta-agonists such as salmeterol can also prolong QTc and cause tachycardia and hypokalemia. Used together they may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmia, especially with other risk factors.
What this interaction means in plain words
Salmeterol and Valbenazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Salmeterol belongs to Respiratory; Valbenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive QT interval prolongation through different pharmacodynamic effects.
What to do
Obtain a baseline ECG and check potassium and magnesium in patients with QT risk factors, and monitor for palpitations or syncope.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
