Summary
Succinylcholine given before vecuronium can enhance and prolong non-depolarizing blockade, and the onset of the blocker may be quickened. Giving vecuronium before succinylcholine, as in a defasciculating dose, may reduce or alter the depolarizing block.
What this interaction means in plain words
Succinylcholine and Vecuronium can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Succinylcholine belongs to Musculoskeletal; Vecuronium belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Depolarizing and non-depolarizing agents act at the same nicotinic receptors, giving pharmacodynamic interaction dependent on sequence and phase of block.
What to do
Allow succinylcholine effects to wane before giving vecuronium, and reduce vecuronium dose. Monitor neuromuscular function with train-of-four.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
