Summary

Voclosporin, a calcineurin inhibitor, can raise serum potassium, and succinylcholine releases potassium from muscle. Together they may cause additive hyperkalemia, especially in patients with reduced renal function.

What this interaction means in plain words

Succinylcholine and Voclosporin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Succinylcholine belongs to Musculoskeletal; Voclosporin belongs to Miscellaneous.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive hyperkalemia from succinylcholine-induced potassium efflux and calcineurin inhibitor reduction of renal potassium excretion.

What to do

Check baseline potassium and renal function before anesthesia. Monitor potassium and ECG after succinylcholine, or choose a non-depolarizing agent if hyperkalemic.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
