Summary
Tipranavir given with ritonavir inhibits enzymes that metabolize thioridazine and may substantially increase its levels. Higher levels risk QT prolongation and life-threatening arrhythmia, and thioridazine labeling contraindicates inhibitors of its metabolism.
What this interaction means in plain words
Thioridazine and Tipranavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Thioridazine belongs to Central Nervous System; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Inhibition of CYP-mediated thioridazine metabolism, mainly through ritonavir-boosted tipranavir.
What to do
Avoid the combination and use an alternative antipsychotic. Check ECG and electrolytes if exposure has occurred.
