Résumé
Fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin can cause both severe hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, especially in patients taking sulfonylureas. Older patients and those with renal impairment are at greatest risk.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Ciprofloxacin and Gliclazide can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Ciprofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Gliclazide belongs to Endocrine.
Pourquoi elle survient
Fluoroquinolones alter pancreatic beta-cell insulin release, adding to sulfonylurea-induced insulin secretion; CYP2C9 inhibition may also contribute.
Conduite à tenir
Monitor blood glucose closely during the antibiotic course and warn the patient about hypoglycemia symptoms. Stop the fluoroquinolone and treat if significant glucose disturbance occurs.
