Summary

Aminoglycosides can cause renal magnesium wasting, leading to hypomagnesemia. Magnesium sulfate also potentiates neuromuscular blockade, which aminoglycosides can cause, so combined use may increase the risk of respiratory muscle weakness.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amikacin and Magnesium sulphate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amikacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Magnesium sulphate belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Aminoglycoside tubular toxicity increases renal magnesium loss, and both agents impair neuromuscular transmission, producing additive effects.

What to do

Monitor serum magnesium and renal function, and watch for muscle weakness or respiratory depression, especially with parenteral magnesium. Replace magnesium as needed.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
