Summary

Calcium loading can partly oppose the effect of calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine. Oral calcium acetate used as a phosphate binder gives little systemic effect, so a meaningful loss of blood pressure control is uncommon.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amlodipine-atorvastatin and Calcium acetate have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Amlodipine-atorvastatin belongs to Cardiovascular; Calcium acetate belongs to Genitourinary.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Increased extracellular calcium may pharmacodynamically antagonize calcium channel blockade.

What to do

No routine action is needed; check blood pressure if high-dose calcium is started or serum calcium rises.
