Summary

Combining amlodipine with verapamil adds two calcium channel blockers, increasing the risk of hypotension, edema, bradycardia and conduction disturbances. Verapamil also inhibits CYP3A4 and may raise amlodipine and atorvastatin concentrations, increasing the risk of statin-related myopathy.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amlodipine-atorvastatin and Verapamil can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amlodipine-atorvastatin belongs to Cardiovascular; Verapamil belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive calcium channel blockade plus CYP3A4 inhibition by verapamil, which reduces metabolism of amlodipine and atorvastatin.

What to do

Avoid routine combination of a dihydropyridine with verapamil unless clearly needed; monitor blood pressure, heart rate and ECG. Watch for muscle pain or weakness and consider a lower atorvastatin dose.
