Summary
Combining two antipsychotics adds dopamine-blocking and sedative effects, raising the risk of extrapyramidal symptoms, sedation, QT effects and rarely neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Aripiprazole may also be added to risperidone to reduce hyperprolactinemia, but the combination needs monitoring.
What this interaction means in plain words
Aripiprazole and Risperidone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Aripiprazole belongs to Central Nervous System; Risperidone belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive D2 receptor antagonism or partial agonism and additive sedative and mild QT effects; aripiprazole may also weakly inhibit CYP2D6.
