Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QTc interval, so combined use may add to the risk of torsades de pointes. The risk is greater with electrolyte disturbance, bradycardia or underlying heart disease.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bedaquiline and Crizotinib can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Bedaquiline belongs to Anti Bacterial; Crizotinib belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation through cardiac repolarization effects.
What to do
Obtain baseline and periodic ECGs and correct potassium, magnesium and calcium before and during therapy. Stop or reconsider one agent if QTc becomes markedly prolonged.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
