Summary

NSAIDs can diminish the diuretic and natriuretic response to loop diuretics like bumetanide. In patients with heart failure, cirrhosis or renal impairment this may cause fluid retention and, in volume-depleted patients, acute kidney injury.

What this interaction means in plain words

Bumetanide and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Bumetanide belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal blood flow and sodium excretion, counteracting loop diuretic action.

What to do

Monitor weight, edema, blood pressure and renal function, and increase diuretic dose if response falls. Avoid the combination in patients with significant renal impairment or heart failure where possible.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
