Summary
Thiazides reduce urinary calcium excretion, and calcifediol increases intestinal calcium absorption. Together they can cause hypercalcemia, particularly in patients with renal impairment or hyperparathyroidism, or those taking calcium supplements.
What this interaction means in plain words
Calcifediol and Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Calcifediol belongs to Musculoskeletal; Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Thiazide-induced renal calcium reabsorption adds to vitamin D-mediated increase in calcium absorption.
What to do
Monitor serum calcium and renal function periodically, and reduce the calcifediol dose or calcium supplements if hypercalcemia develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
