Summary
Loop diuretics such as torsemide increase urinary calcium loss, which may modestly reduce serum calcium and partly counter calcium supplementation. This is rarely clinically significant and is sometimes used deliberately to treat hypercalcemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Calcium carbonate and Torsemide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Calcium carbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Torsemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Inhibition of the Na-K-2Cl cotransporter in the loop of Henle reduces paracellular calcium reabsorption and increases calciuria.
What to do
Monitor serum calcium periodically in patients on long-term loop diuretics and supplements.
