Summary

Canagliflozin is not a typical potassium-raising drug, but it has been associated with small potassium increases in some patients. Combined with irbesartan, which reduces potassium excretion, hyperkalemia is possible mainly in renal impairment. Both can also cause volume depletion and reduced kidney function.

What this interaction means in plain words

Canagliflozin and Irbesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Canagliflozin belongs to Endocrine; Irbesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Irbesartan reduces aldosterone-mediated potassium excretion while canagliflozin may modestly raise potassium and cause volume depletion; the potassium effect is not fully established.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium, creatinine and volume status after starting or adjusting therapy, especially in CKD.

What to ask your pharmacist
