Summary
Both drugs depress the CNS, so sedation, dizziness and ataxia may increase. Carbamazepine also induces CYP3A4 and lowers clobazam levels while increasing the active metabolite N-desmethylclobazam.
What this interaction means in plain words
Carbamazepine and Clobazam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Carbamazepine belongs to Central Nervous System; Clobazam belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression plus carbamazepine induction of CYP3A4 altering clobazam and N-desmethylclobazam exposure.
What to do
Monitor for sedation and changes in seizure control and adjust clobazam dosing as needed. Check carbamazepine levels if toxicity is suspected.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
