Summary
Loop diuretics have been reported to add to the renal burden of some cephalosporins, particularly in volume-depleted or already compromised patients. With cefpodoxime the risk is small and clinically significant kidney injury is uncommon.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefpodoxime and Furosemide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefpodoxime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Possible additive renal effects through diuretic-induced volume depletion; a direct synergistic nephrotoxic mechanism is not well established.
What to do
No routine change is needed; monitor serum creatinine and hydration status in patients with renal impairment or high-dose diuretic therapy.
What to ask your pharmacist
