Summary
Antibiotics were once thought to reduce the efficacy of oral estrogen-containing contraceptives by disrupting gut bacteria that recycle estrogens. Pharmacokinetic studies have generally not shown a meaningful drop in hormone levels with non-enzyme-inducing antibiotics, so any risk is very small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefprozil and Estradiol have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefprozil belongs to Anti Bacterial; Estradiol belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Theoretical reduction of enterohepatic recirculation of estrogen through altered gut flora, not well supported.
What to do
No routine change is required. Advise patients using oral hormonal contraception to report vomiting or severe diarrhea, which can reduce absorption.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
