Summary

Corticosteroids with mineralocorticoid activity and thiazide diuretics both promote potassium loss, so combined use can contribute to hypokalemia. With inhaled mometasone the systemic exposure is low and the effect is usually small.

What this interaction means in plain words

Chlorothiazide and Mometasone have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Chlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Mometasone belongs to Respiratory.

Why it happens

Additive renal potassium wasting from thiazide-induced distal delivery of sodium and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid effects.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium, particularly with high doses or other hypokalemia risk factors, and supplement if needed.
