Summary

Thiazide-type diuretics reduce urinary calcium excretion, and with vitamin D this may lead to hypercalcemia. The risk is greater with high vitamin D doses or in hypoparathyroidism and renal impairment.

What this interaction means in plain words

Chlorthalidone and Ergocalciferol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Chlorthalidone belongs to Cardiovascular; Ergocalciferol belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Chlorthalidone decreases renal calcium excretion, adding to the increased calcium absorption caused by vitamin D.

What to do

Monitor serum calcium, especially after starting or changing doses. Reduce vitamin D dose if hypercalcemia develops.
