Drug interactions
cisplatin + omeprazole
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Additive risk of profound hypomagnesemia (and secondary hypokalemia/hypocalcemia). Cisplatin causes renal Mg wasting; PPIs can cause Mg depletion with prolonged use, increasing risk of arrhythmias or seizures.
Mechanism of action
Additive magnesium depletion: cisplatin-induced renal wasting plus omeprazole-associated reduced intestinal Mg absorption.
Clinical management
Check Mg, K, Ca at baseline and periodically during cisplatin therapy; replace deficits. Consider minimizing PPI duration or switching to H2RA if appropriate. Obtain ECG and treat urgently if symptomatic or with significant electrolyte abnormalities.
