Summary
Low molecular weight heparins can suppress aldosterone secretion, and when combined with an angiotensin receptor blocker the risk of hyperkalemia rises. This is most relevant in patients with renal impairment, diabetes or prolonged use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dalteparin and Losartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of adrenal aldosterone synthesis adds to the reduction of potassium excretion from angiotensin receptor blockade.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium in patients on prolonged therapy or with risk factors such as renal impairment or diabetes.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
