Summary

Goserelin lowers testosterone and can prolong the QT interval, and desipramine also has QT-prolonging potential at higher exposures. Together they may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, especially in patients with other risk factors.

What this interaction means in plain words

Desipramine and Goserelin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Desipramine belongs to Central Nervous System; Goserelin belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation, with androgen deprivation by goserelin and cardiac ion channel effects of desipramine.

What to do

Obtain a baseline ECG and repeat it after treatment starts, and correct potassium and magnesium abnormalities. Reconsider the combination if the QTc becomes markedly prolonged.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
