Fluphenazine has anticholinergic properties in addition to dopamine blockade, so combined use increases anticholinergic burden with constipation, urinary retention, dry mouth and confusion. Anticholinergics may also slow gastric emptying and modestly alter antipsychotic absorption.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dicyclomine and Fluphenazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Dicyclomine belongs to Respiratory; Fluphenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive antimuscarinic effects; anticholinergic slowing of GI motility may alter oral antipsychotic absorption.

What to do

Monitor for anticholinergic toxicity, bowel obstruction signs and loss of antipsychotic control. Consider an alternative to dicyclomine in patients with dementia or older age.
