Summary
Levofloxacin has little effect on digoxin in most patients, but a modest rise in digoxin levels has been described, possibly through P-glycoprotein effects. Digoxin toxicity could therefore occur in a vulnerable patient, such as one with renal impairment.
What this interaction means in plain words
Digoxin and Levofloxacin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Digoxin belongs to Cardiovascular; Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Possible inhibition of P-glycoprotein-mediated digoxin efflux, increasing absorption and reducing clearance; the effect is small and inconsistent.
What to do
Monitor for signs of digoxin toxicity and check a digoxin level if symptoms or renal impairment are present. No routine dose change is needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
