Summary
Serotonin syndrome has been reported when 5-HT3 antagonists are given with serotonergic antidepressants such as SSRIs. Sertraline also has a small QT effect, which adds to dolasetron's own QT liability.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dolasetron and Sertraline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dolasetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Sertraline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Possible additive serotonergic effect, plus minor additive QT prolongation.
What to do
Monitor for signs of serotonin toxicity and consider an ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors. Choose an alternative antiemetic if risk is high.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
