Summary

Thioridazine causes marked, dose-related QT prolongation and is itself associated with torsades de pointes. Adding dolasetron substantially increases the risk of fatal arrhythmia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dolasetron and Thioridazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Dolasetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Thioridazine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive potassium channel blockade producing marked QT prolongation.

What to do

Do not combine; choose an antiemetic from a class without QT effects such as a dopamine antagonist alternative with low risk. Thioridazine labeling advises against use with other QT-prolonging agents.
