Summary
Tipranavir, boosted with ritonavir, strongly inhibits CYP3A4 and is expected to increase dronedarone concentrations. This raises the risk of QT prolongation and serious ventricular arrhythmia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dronedarone and Tipranavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Dronedarone belongs to Cardiovascular; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
CYP3A4 inhibition by ritonavir-boosted tipranavir decreases dronedarone metabolism.
What to do
Avoid the combination and use an alternative antiarrhythmic or antiretroviral regimen.
