Summary
Fluconazole, a CYP3A4 inhibitor, can modestly increase exposure to prednisolone, the active form of prednisone. This may enhance corticosteroid effects such as hyperglycemia, fluid retention and adrenal suppression, especially at higher fluconazole doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluconazole and Prednisone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fluconazole belongs to Anti Fungals; Prednisone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Fluconazole inhibits CYP3A4, reducing hepatic clearance of prednisolone.
What to do
Monitor for corticosteroid adverse effects such as hyperglycemia and edema, and consider reducing the prednisone dose if they appear.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
