Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, so combined use may increase the risk of torsades de pointes, particularly with electrolyte disturbances. Chemotherapy-related vomiting and diarrhea can worsen this risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluphenazine and Oxaliplatin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fluphenazine belongs to Central Nervous System; Oxaliplatin belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation through cardiac repolarization effects.
What to do
Obtain a baseline ECG and correct potassium and magnesium before and during treatment. Monitor the QTc periodically and consider an alternative to fluphenazine if QTc becomes prolonged.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
