Summary
Both ACE inhibitors and pregabalin have been associated with angioedema of the face, lips and throat. Using them together may raise the likelihood of this reaction, which can threaten the airway, although such events are uncommon.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fosinopril-hydrochlorothiazide and Pregabalin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fosinopril-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Pregabalin belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
ACE inhibitors cause bradykinin accumulation leading to angioedema, and pregabalin has independently been linked to angioedema, so the risks may be additive.
What to do
Counsel patients to stop both drugs and seek emergency care for swelling of the face, tongue or throat. Review the need for each drug if angioedema occurs and avoid rechallenge with the ACE inhibitor.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
