Summary
NSAIDs may reduce renal clearance of aminoglycosides and, together with gentamicin, increase the risk of nephrotoxicity. Higher gentamicin concentrations raise the risk of kidney injury and ototoxicity.
What this interaction means in plain words
Gentamicin and Nabumetone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Gentamicin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Nabumetone belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces renal perfusion and glomerular filtration, decreasing gentamicin elimination and adding to its tubular toxicity.
What to do
Monitor serum creatinine and gentamicin trough levels and adjust the dose accordingly. Avoid nabumetone in patients with renal impairment or dehydration receiving gentamicin.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
