Summary
Ritonavir inhibits CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein and can raise systemic indacaterol exposure, which may intensify beta-agonist effects such as tachycardia, tremor and hypokalemia. Both agents can also affect QT interval, so arrhythmia risk may be somewhat higher.
What this interaction means in plain words
Indacaterol and Ritonavir can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Indacaterol belongs to Respiratory; Ritonavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Ritonavir inhibits CYP3A4 and P-gp mediated clearance of indacaterol, with possible additive QT effects.
What to do
Use the usual indacaterol dose and monitor heart rate, palpitations, serum potassium and ECG in patients with cardiac risk factors. Avoid adding further QT-prolonging drugs where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
