Summary
In preterm infants indomethacin lowers renal perfusion and may raise levels of renally cleared aminoglycosides. Oral paromomycin is minimally absorbed, so significant exposure is unlikely unless the gut is damaged or kidney function is poor.
What this interaction means in plain words
Indomethacin and Paromomycin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Indomethacin belongs to Musculoskeletal; Paromomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Indomethacin reduces renal blood flow and glomerular filtration, decreasing aminoglycoside elimination.
What to do
No routine action is required. In neonates or patients with renal impairment or inflamed bowel, monitor renal function.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
