Summary
The active metabolites of ozanimod inhibit MAO-B in vitro, so there is concern about enhanced sympathomimetic effects. Isoproterenol is not a major MAO substrate, so the clinical risk is probably smaller than with indirect sympathomimetics, but blood pressure and heart rate rises are possible.
What this interaction means in plain words
Isoproterenol and Ozanimod can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Isoproterenol belongs to Respiratory; Ozanimod belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Possible MAO inhibition by ozanimod metabolites adds to adrenergic stimulation, though the mechanism is largely theoretical for this direct agonist.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate during co-administration. Avoid other agents that raise norepinephrine or serotonin where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
