Summary
Verapamil inhibits CYP3A4 and increases exposure to levamlodipine, the active enantiomer of amlodipine. This may cause hypotension, peripheral edema and dizziness. Combining two calcium channel blockers also adds pharmacodynamic effects.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levamlodipine and Verapamil can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Levamlodipine belongs to Cardiovascular; Verapamil belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
CYP3A4 inhibition reduces levamlodipine metabolism, with additive calcium channel blockade.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and for edema, and reduce the levamlodipine dose if hypotension or edema develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
