Summary
Linezolid inhibits MAO and vortioxetine increases serotonergic transmission, so the combination can cause serotonin syndrome with agitation, hyperthermia, clonus and autonomic instability. Vortioxetine labeling contraindicates use with MAO inhibitors including linezolid.
What this interaction means in plain words
Linezolid and Vortioxetine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Linezolid belongs to Anti Bacterial; Vortioxetine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition combined with serotonin reuptake inhibition leads to excess serotonergic activity.
What to do
Avoid; if linezolid is needed urgently, stop vortioxetine and monitor for serotonin syndrome, resuming vortioxetine about 24 hours after the last linezolid dose per labeling.
What to ask your pharmacist
