Summary
Thyroid hormone can enhance the cardiac and CNS stimulating effects of tricyclic antidepressants. This may increase the chance of tachycardia, arrhythmias and agitation, particularly at higher thyroid doses. Thyroid hormone is also sometimes used deliberately to augment antidepressant response.
What this interaction means in plain words
Liothyronine and Nortriptyline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Liothyronine belongs to Endocrine; Nortriptyline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Thyroid hormone increases sensitivity of adrenergic receptors, which adds to the noradrenergic effects of the TCA.
What to do
Monitor heart rate, rhythm and thyroid function, and use ECG monitoring in patients with cardiac disease. Adjust doses if palpitations or arrhythmias occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
