Summary
NSAIDs such as lornoxicam can reduce renal prostaglandin synthesis, which blunts the antihypertensive effect of losartan and impairs renal function, especially in older, dehydrated or renally impaired patients. Hyperkalemia and acute kidney injury may result.
What this interaction means in plain words
Lornoxicam and Losartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Lornoxicam belongs to Musculoskeletal; Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of prostaglandin-mediated renal vasodilation combined with angiotensin receptor blockade reduces glomerular filtration and potassium excretion and counteracts blood pressure lowering.
What to do
Monitor serum creatinine, potassium and blood pressure, ensure adequate hydration, and use the lowest effective NSAID dose for the shortest time.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
