Summary
Methamphetamine is partly metabolized by CYP2D6, which propafenone inhibits, so methamphetamine exposure may increase. Greater sympathomimetic effects can provoke tachycardia, hypertension and arrhythmias, which may counteract or complicate antiarrhythmic therapy.
What this interaction means in plain words
Methamphetamine and Propafenone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Methamphetamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Propafenone belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Propafenone inhibits CYP2D6 metabolism of methamphetamine, with opposing pharmacodynamic cardiac effects.
What to do
Monitor heart rate, blood pressure and rhythm, and lower the methamphetamine dose if sympathomimetic effects increase. Consider an alternative if arrhythmia occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
