What this interaction means in plain words
Methamphetamine and Ritonavir can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Methamphetamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Ritonavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Inhibition of CYP2D6-mediated metabolism of methamphetamine by ritonavir, increasing exposure.
What to do
Avoid the combination where possible. If it is used, monitor blood pressure, heart rate and cardiac symptoms and use the lowest effective methamphetamine dose.
