Summary
Combining mirtazapine with a nonselective MAO inhibitor can cause serotonin syndrome and, with tranylcypromine, hypertensive reactions. Mirtazapine labeling contraindicates use with MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping one.
What this interaction means in plain words
Mirtazapine and Tranylcypromine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Mirtazapine belongs to Central Nervous System; Tranylcypromine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Irreversible MAO inhibition raises monoamine levels, which adds to the serotonergic and noradrenergic effects of mirtazapine.
What to do
Do not coadminister. Allow at least 14 days between stopping either drug and starting the other.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
