Summary

Both drugs prolong the QT interval, and quizartinib carries a boxed warning for QT prolongation, torsades de pointes and cardiac arrest. Giving ondansetron with it can add to the risk of serious ventricular arrhythmia, particularly if electrolytes are abnormal.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ondansetron and Quizartinib can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Ondansetron belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Quizartinib belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation through delayed cardiac repolarization (hERG potassium channel effects).

What to do

Avoid the combination if possible and choose a non-QT-prolonging antiemetic. If it is unavoidable, correct potassium and magnesium and monitor ECG more frequently.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
