Summary
Ozanimod's active metabolite inhibits MAO-B, and sumatriptan is a serotonergic vasoconstrictor. Together they may raise blood pressure and, in theory, serotonergic toxicity. Sumatriptan is mainly cleared by MAO-A, so the interaction is mainly theoretical and based on the labeling for ozanimod.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ozanimod and Sumatriptan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ozanimod belongs to Central Nervous System; Sumatriptan belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
In vitro MAO-B inhibition by an ozanimod metabolite may increase monoamine exposure, and triptans add serotonergic and vasoconstrictive effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate when a triptan is used with ozanimod, and counsel the patient to report severe headache, agitation or palpitations. Choose a non-serotonergic acute migraine therapy if blood pressure is difficult to control.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
