Summary
Ozanimod's active metabolites inhibit MAO-B in vitro, so there is a theoretical risk of raised blood pressure with drugs affecting adrenergic or serotonergic pathways. Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker with no meaningful sympathomimetic action, so a hypertensive reaction is unlikely. Ozanimod can also slow heart rate and conduction, which may add to verapamil's effects on the AV node.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ozanimod and Verapamil can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ozanimod belongs to Central Nervous System; Verapamil belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive negative chronotropic and dromotropic effects; the MAO-B inhibition concern does not apply to verapamil in any established way.
What to do
Check ECG and heart rate before starting ozanimod in patients taking verapamil, and monitor heart rate and blood pressure during initiation. Seek cardiology advice if the patient has conduction disease.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
