Summary

Procarbazine has weak monoamine oxidase inhibiting activity, which may add to serotonergic effects and in theory raise the risk of serotonin syndrome with risperidone. Procarbazine also causes CNS depression, which may add to sedation from risperidone.

What this interaction means in plain words

Procarbazine and Risperidone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Procarbazine belongs to Oncology; Risperidone belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Weak MAO inhibition by procarbazine with additive serotonergic and CNS depressant effects; clinical evidence is limited.

What to do

Monitor for agitation, tremor, hyperthermia, rigidity and sedation. Stop either drug and treat if signs of serotonin toxicity or neuroleptic malignant syndrome appear.

What to ask your pharmacist
