Summary

Rizatriptan is cleared mainly by MAO-A, and procarbazine has MAO-inhibiting activity. Concurrent use markedly raises rizatriptan levels and adds serotonergic effects, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome and vasoconstrictive toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Procarbazine and Rizatriptan are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Procarbazine belongs to Oncology; Rizatriptan belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO-A inhibition by procarbazine decreases rizatriptan metabolism and adds serotonergic activity.

What to do

Avoid rizatriptan during procarbazine treatment and for 2 weeks after stopping it. Choose a triptan not metabolized by MAO-A and monitor for serotonin toxicity.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
