Summary

Procarbazine has MAO inhibiting properties, and trazodone adds serotonergic activity, so serotonin syndrome or blood pressure swings may occur. Labeling for trazodone prohibits use with MAO inhibitors.

What this interaction means in plain words

Procarbazine and Trazodone are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Procarbazine belongs to Oncology; Trazodone belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive serotonergic effect from MAO inhibition by procarbazine and serotonin reuptake inhibition by trazodone.

What to do

Avoid the combination and allow a 14 day washout after stopping either agent before starting the other. Use a non-serotonergic option for sleep or depression during procarbazine treatment.

What to ask your pharmacist
