Summary
Tedizolid is a weak reversible MAO inhibitor and tranylcypromine is an irreversible nonselective MAOI. Combined use could raise the risk of serotonin toxicity or hypertensive reactions. Tedizolid was not studied with MAOIs in clinical trials, and the related oxazolidinone linezolid is contraindicated with them.
What this interaction means in plain words
Tedizolid and Tranylcypromine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Tedizolid belongs to Anti Bacterial; Tranylcypromine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive monoamine oxidase inhibition leading to pharmacodynamic potentiation of serotonergic and pressor effects.
What to do
Avoid the combination where possible and choose a different antibacterial. If it is unavoidable, monitor closely for serotonin syndrome and blood pressure elevation.
