Grossesse et allaitement
- Grossesse
- Safe Crosses the placenta; excess dose can cause fetal goitre and hypothyroidism. US label: may be preferred in the 1st trimester (methimazole is linked to rare birth defects), then switch to methimazole because of maternal liver toxicity. Use the lowest effective dose; monitor mother and fetus.
- Allaitement
- Safe Small amounts pass into milk (about 0.025% of a 400 mg dose in 4 hours); clinically insignificant (US label). LactMed: methimazole is now preferred because of PTU liver injury, but no infant liver damage has been reported; limit to 450 mg daily if possible.
